Ken Behr Turns Years as a DEA Cooperating Source Into True Crime Podcast Crime Nightly

The author of One Step Over The Line now plans to help other true crime podcasters grow their own audiences.

Hollywood, FL, United States, 25th Jul 2026 – Ken Behr spent more than two decades inside large-scale smuggling operation before becoming a cooperating source for the DEA. He now hosts Crime Nightly, a true crime podcast covering cold cases, missing persons and criminal investigations at crimenightly.com. Behr plans to bring the experience of building Crime Nightly into a new effort to help other true crime podcast hosts grow their own shows.

Behr’s path into that world started in the 1970s, when he was a teenager working out of his mother’s house. What started small grew into a large-scale smuggling operation that Behr ran for more than two decades. He traveled the country by cigarette boat, raced cars and flew on private jets during those years, working alongside some of the biggest smugglers in the world and crossing paths with figures ranging from movie stars to murderers along the way.

Facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison, Behr chose to work as a cooperating source for the DEA. He later wrote about that part of his life in the memoir One Step Over The Line, a title drawn from the 1970s song “One Toke Over the Line.” The book marks Behr’s first attempt at writing and covers both his own story and smuggling in South Florida during that era.

In the book’s author’s note, Behr also writes about working through post-traumatic stress connected to those decades, an experience he says caught him off guard after years of assuming PTSD applied only to others.

Behr’s years inside federal investigations and his firsthand knowledge of large-scale trafficking now shape his work behind the microphone. He launched Crime Nightly to bring that background to unsolved cases, missing persons investigations and interviews with researchers and formerly incarcerated individuals.
